  1. Hi Maryanne,

I’ve had a few books put out, some under my own name and some as an ‘alternative history’ under ‘Tito Kithes Athano’ as part of the ‘alternative’ conceit.

My wife has urged me to write down some of the bed-time stories I told our daughters when they were 4 to 6 years old, and again to my grandson, but I need an illustrator for that. I traced you through the ‘Little Steps’ site, and was attracted by your echidna. Just like ‘Freddy’ in my stories!

I would like to send you the half-dozen or so episodes I’ve typed up so far as a sampler, with much polishing and a few more stories to come. Would you be interested in working with me? You have my email address, so please contact me if you would care to read the work so far.

Many thanks for your time and attention,

    Bob Springett

    • Hi Bob,

Thank you so much for your enquiry. I would be honoured to discuss and possibly illustrate your children’s story for you. Your other titles look really interesting. I can imagine how happy your grandson will be when he reads your children’s story.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

      • Hi Maryanne,

I hope you will understand my reluctance to use the ‘REPLY’ tab on the email. I have been told to be wary of clicking on such things.

So far I’ve tapped out stories, just to provide a sampler. What I have in mind is to discuss the final drafts with my illustrator to capture moments that might be hooks for the most effective illustrations; I’ve been ‘written words only’ in my books up to this date. I would be pleased to send these though to you to see if you think they have potential.

As for financial arrangements, I’m totally a novice in such arrangements. What would you like as a basis for agreement?

      • Hi Bob,
The pricing for illustrations can vary depending on the complexity of the images required.
As a general rule for illustrations based in watercolour, acrylic and ink a single small spot can be up to $50, single page up to $100. Double page spread up to $300.
Of course everything is negotiable. We could discuss a price limit that you would feel comfortable with.
After all it is the opportunity to create that is most important.
I’m happy to send my personal email address when you are ready.

      • Hi Maryanne,

Thanks for getting back so promptly.

As I said, I’m a new name in this business, and a pensioner who can’t afford to outlay too much capital.

I was hoping for something more like a partnership than a commission. I also recognise that it’s to the illustrator that makes of breaks a children’s book, so I’m more than happy to come to an arrangement whereby you would take the lion’s share of royalties rather than a fee up front.

Have you skimmed through the stories? If you like, think of it as YOUR book, and I am no more than the provider of text in exchange for a small share in the project.

Is this a possible way forward?

  2. Hi Bob,

I’m happy to go on this adventure with you. I understand the limitations around finances and will happily negotiate a percentage that is fair with you.
You asked if I have skimmed through the stories?
I haven’t found any link to them at this point. It would be easier to chat through personal email. I have a thought about how I can give you my email without sharing it to the world. I could send you a comment through your contact Bob with my email.
What are your thoughts about this?
